Ask questions

Something profound from one of the most inspirational women ever.  I love this passage, I try to embrace this ethos in everyday.  Let us become a community across the world, let us not judge or pass judgment. Instead, let’s ask questions and listen.

“If you don’t understand, ask questions. If you’re uncomfortable about asking questions, say you are uncomfortable about asking questions and then ask anyway. It’s easy to tell when a question is coming from a good place. Then listen some more. Sometimes people just want to feel heard. Here’s to possibilities of friendship and connection and understanding.”

Donating Elf

A different type of adventure all together. This morning I am off to give blood.  I have done this a couple of times before but this is the first time in a while. I head down to the center with my paperwork.

First you see an assistant who goes through your paperwork, checking your travel history ect. important if you have been to certain countries especially malarial countries.  This is also the finger prick time, this is the bit that I don’t like but its over in a moment. But my iron levels are okay so next its through to the main event.

Set up in the chair I get a good view of a cooking program on the telly which is good.  Then all hooked up.  I keep my blood pressure up using some of the handy hints that the nursing team give, making sure to keep clenching my fist and bobbling my feet up and down.  It is down 20 minutes or so and after a few minutes of pressure and sitting up straight, I’m off to the refreshments and enjoying a ginger-nut and some cordial.  Yum.

It is virtually painless, it takes no time at all and it saves lives.  Please donate if you can and if your can’t nag your partners, siblings, parents to do so.

Head to the website for more information.

Happy Elf

With all the darkness that fills this world, I’m sharing this beautiful quote which reminds me to banish hate and focus on the light.  If I can let someone go in front of me at the till, or tell someone walking down the street singing, that their voice is beautiful, then I will.  We each can be the goodness that we want to see in the world.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

Singing…ish Elf

Ooo!  We’ve reached a milestone here at Elves About.  This is our 100th blog.  To celebrate here is something just for fun.

Here is a little film of the wonderful singing of the Natural History Museum lates team! Forgive the terrible camera work, I was laughing and trying to sing, multitasking…

Hope you enjoy!

Natural History Museum – Elf out late!

London is lucky to have some of the best museums and art galleries in the world.  One of my particular favourites is the Natural History Museum.  A new series of Museum lates has started, these happen at lots of the London Museums and there are different themes and exhibitions to attend.  This series at the Natural History Museum is “Dino Snores”.  we book ourselves in and head off to the museum after dark.

As we arrive we are assigned houses (I end up in Dino House) and head into the museum.  There is music playing, food and drink available, activities…and no children.  Now I’m very much aware that I will sound a grumpy miser for saying this, but, it’s absolutely brilliant without the kids!  I mean there are no tantrums, no trying to look sensible, no lines of people, no school groups taking up whole galleries… Nothing to stop us adults from being kids!

We take full advantage of the big kid atmosphere and we throw ourselves 100% into the face painting and mask making. imag2462

We start by watching the “Rocks The House” show with the messy experiments and fun camera work.  Next up is a stroll through the dinosaur exhibitions.  imag2464We make dinosaur themed t-shirts.

Our group takes part in the egg and spoon race with a little too much competitive spirit we skate down the hall, egg and spoon in hand and big fluffy dino slippers on.  It’s a photo finish and our friends in Panda House win the house points.

Next, we head into the observatory which has been blown up in the corals exhibition room.  It is magical, we sit on the floor and watch the milky way move across the ceiling above us.  The presenter is fantastic.  This is a definite highlight.imag2473

We assemble at the exit and sing a roaring chorus of “Circle of Life”.  This is joy affirming!

We also have tickets to the silent disco and spend the rest of the night dancing away in the museum to three great DJs.

Get yourself tickets to the next one.  One of my favourite nights out in a long time and a great opportunity to be a big kid.

Elf’s tip – cheaper tickets are available on some of the voucher sites.

Elf’s Travel Tips

These are some of our best loved tips for air travel, hope you find them helpful.

Take a water bottle with you

With the restrictions on liquids and the dry air on flights you can end up gasping for water.  Take your empty water bottle with you through security and fill it up once you are though.  A lot of airports have water fountains where you can do this.  Or buy a bottle of water in duty free.

Always have a spare pair of undies in your on-board baggage.

Before your think that…it is amazing how often bags get delayed or lost, having a spare pair of undies in your cabin bag makes such a difference.  Same with the toothbrush pop that in the hand luggage as well.  Then if the worst happens it won’t feel too much like a disaster.

Face wipes are a life saver on long haul flights

Nothing feels better on a long hall flight then washing your face.  Depending on where you are transiting some of the airport facilities might not say…put your face in here.  A face wipe will make you feel a little more human.  They also make a convenient way to make sure you don’t smell like you’ve had a 12-hour stopover without finding the airport showers.

Put your glasses on

If you normally wear contacts, forgo them for the flight especially if it is long haul. Contacts will make your eyes dry out and feel horrible.

Take your scarf with you

I spent a very cold 8 hour flight back to the UK because I didn’t have enough layers with me.  I now travel with a pashmina so that I can use it as a blanket if needed.  It also doubles as a pillow, eye shade, smell blocker outer and spilt coffee stain hider.

Elf YES!

About this time last year, I decided that I needed a pick me up.  I needed more adventure and joy in my life so started this blog with that idea in mind.

12 months on Mr Elf and I are saying yes to more and more adventures, we are planning a great big Elfventure as well.  Travel, food, cooking, craft, exercise and trying new things have become part of our everyday lives. It’s been an amazing journey and I am excited by the new opportunities and adventures that this blog has given us and have brought to our lives.  By saying yes to trying new things I have learnt so much, by saying yes to new places, new skills and new experiences, we have been more present and more content in life.

I hope that so far you have enjoyed reading our adventures.

Here’s to another year and many more!!
