“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.”
– Henry James
This week we are talking kindness, today in particular kindness to others.
Recently I was on the pointy end of some unpleasant behaviour that would best be described as “unkindness”. Nothing overt or dramatically mean was said. No eggs thrown. But the comments I received from another professional were decidedly unkind.
So, kindness. Treating others as we would like to be treated, yes but more than that, a little smile goes a long way. Understanding that you may not been fully aware of the situation, after all as much as we might think we can or would like to, we cannot live in another’s skin and experience life as they do. So a smile, kind word, helping out or even just backing away and giving space to everyone, office enemy and best friend alike.
It is too easy to ignore each other, or say something with the intent to help without thinking about the content of what we say. Or if you are in London, it is too easy to think your tube trip is somehow more important than someone else’s and push your way into the carriage, or think that you are the only one who’s feet are hearting and head is pounding and therefore you deserve that seat more than someone else. It is far easier to look down at our magazine or paper and block people out but instead, lets extend some kindness and value others as much as we value ourselves.
What am I doing? I’m forgiving the harsh words and the person they came from and turning it on its head. You are all wonderful, thank you for the kindness of reading my post and supporting the Little Elf.
